Issues with reservation system and paypal

While using the sandbox mode for PayPal, the system behaves normal; the customer details are entered the page redirects to PayPal, and once the test transaction is completed it redirects back to the reservation website giving a confirmation number. On the backend, the reservation is marked as confirmed, the payment status changes to paid, and the room is checked out of inventory.

Once the PayPal payment option is changed from sandbox to live mode, the system does the same procedure for the reservation process, but on the backend it does nothing. The reservation stays as pending and so does the payment status. This creates a problem because although the payment is complete, the room assigned to the reservation stays in inventory.
