How to generate Google Maps API Key
Since June 22, 2016 - Google requires Maps API Key in order to use their Maps product, so if your site is using Google Maps, make sure that you get a key to keep your map working properly.
Here are step-by-step instructions to create a Google Maps API key:
1. Creating a new project
Navigate to the Google Developers Console. If you are not already logged in google will ask you to do so.
Look to the right, you will see a button that says Create project.
Once you click “Create project”, a pop-up will appear, and then click the Create button.
Give your project a name and then click the Create button.
NOTE If you want to use an existing project, please select it from the list.
2. Enable the Google Map APIs
Once your project is created, from the Google Developers Console Dashboard select ENABLE APIS AND SERVICES. Or you can go to the Library menu on the left-hand side of the page.
In the API Library look for the Maps JavaScript API. Then click it.
By clicking on this link, it will redirect you to a new page, where you can Enable the API. Just simply click on the button to activate it.
NOTE If you are HUB subscriber, you need to enable more Maps Static API.
- Google Maps JavaScript API (for Solidres Options - Component - Google Map API Key)
- Google Maps Static API (for Solidres Options - Hub - Google Static Map API Key)
3. Create a new API key
After activating the API, select Credentials tab menu, click Create credentials, then select API key.
On the API key created a popup, select and copy your newly created API key.
OPTIONALLY You can click on the Restrict key button to name your API key and restrict it to specific HTTP referrers (websites).
Once clicked, you will need to insert your domain name on which you want to use the API. This is an important step because you don’t want everyone to use your API. Insert your domain(s) and hit the “Save” button.
Now you will be redirected to Credentials page again, where you can grab your new API key.
Grab the API key and save it for later use. You can always go back to your project later and get the API key or create a new one, or even delete your existing keys.
Set your Google Maps browser key
Now back on your website, log in to your Joomla / WordPress dashboard.
- If you are using Joomla: Go to Global Configuration, then Solidres from the menu. Paste the browser key you copied earlier into the "Google Map API Key" field at the Component tab and "Google Map Static API Key" field at Hub tab (if you are HUB subscriber).
- If you are using WordPress: Go to Systems menu → Settings → Plugins tab → "Google Maps API Key" field.
Making sure you have pasted the exact key without extra spaces. Then click the Save button. You should now be able to use Google Maps on your website.
If you have trouble displaying Google maps on your site, please verify that the Google Maps Javascript API is enabled in the Google Maps API Manager.
If you have trouble displaying Google maps on your backend, please verify that the Google Maps Geocoding API is enabled in the Google Maps API Manager.
